Fuel Surcharge

Changes in fuel prices have resulted in increased overall costs for the transport industry, necessitating a variable fuel surcharge which may rise, fall or be removed, in line with movements in fuel prices.

The fuel surcharge for international Time Definite services will be based on the monthly average spot prices for US Gulf Coast (USGC) kerosene-type jet fuel, as reported by the U.S. Department of Energy.
The fuel surcharge for Day Definite services will be based on the most suitable national measure of diesel fuel prices. The surcharge is linked to the consumer price in local currency of diesel fuel inclusive of duties and taxes and published here. Within Europe this is measured by the European Commission Directorate General for Energy and Transport and published in the Oil Bulletin.
There will be a two month lag in the application of the index. For example, the monthly average price for fuel in January is used to determine the applicable surcharge for March. This is due to the release dates of the spot pricing data.

The fuel surcharge applies to transportation charges on all services and to the following surcharges (where applicable):
  • Remote Area Service
  • Saturday Delivery
  • Non Standard Pickup
  • Over Handled Piece
  • Over Weight Piece
  • Over Sized Piece
  • Emergency Situation
DHL Express reserves the right to change the fuel surcharge index and table with or without notice. Both the amount and duration of the surcharge will be determined at DHL's sole discretion.
