Currency Surcharge

CURRENCY SURCHARGE

DHL Express shall be entitled to implement a currency surcharge - expressed as a percentage - on all international shipments, in the event of the currency of Nigeria (“the local currency”) devaluing by more than 5% against the United States Dollar, on average, over any consecutive three-month period or by more than 15% in any one month.
For the purposes of determining whether such a devaluation has occurred and implementing any surcharge:
  • For any current year, the base exchange rate of the local currency to the United States Dollar shall be determined on the first working day of October of the previous year;
  • Thereafter, the base exchange rate shall be compared to the exchange rate of the local currency to the United States Dollar on the last working day of every month in the current year;
  • A currency surcharge shall begin to apply in the event of the local currency devaluing by more than 5% against the United States Dollar, on average, over any consecutive three-month period or by more than 15% in any one month of the current year;
  • The currency surcharge shall fluctuate on the first day of each month, dependant on the percentage by which the local currency has devalued against the United States Dollar when compared to the base exchange rate, and shall be determined with reference to the Index Table. The Index Table shall be subject to change on the first working day of October of each year to recalculate the base exchange rate applicable for the next year.
  • Exchange rates shall be determined by DHL Express in its sole discretion with reference to the exchange rates published by the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM);
  • DHL Express shall be the sole arbiter of whether and the extent to which a devaluation has occurred and whether (and at what percentage) a currency surcharge should be implemented.
  • The currency surcharge may be applied to all items on a customer’s invoice, excluding duties and taxes.
DHL Express reserves the right to change its method of determining or implementing the currency surcharge (including the index table) without prior notice.
