Internal Transaction Number

What is an ITN?

Electronic Export Information (EEI) formerly known as a Shippers Export Declaration (SED) must be filed electronically through the Automated Export System (AES). Once the AES filing record is approved by the U.S. government, an Internal Transaction Number (ITN) is returned as proof that the filing has been accepted. If you are a self filer, your ITN number will need to be included on the air waybill for any shipment that requires an EEI filing through AES. If you want to select DHL as your filing agent, DHL will submit your Electronic Export Information (EEI) on your behalf. You do not need to wait for an Internal Transaction Number (ITN) or apply it to your waybill. DHL will handle all of the processing for you. Paper SED’s will no longer be accepted.

How to obtain an ITN

AESDirect - is the U.S. Census Bureau's free, Internet based system for filing EEI information. Once you register with AESDirect you can file directly and have your ITN returned directly to you. You can register for AESDirect at https://ace.cbp.dhs.gov/

DHL as your agent - DHL will file your EEI directly with AES on your behalf so you don’t need to be registered with AES (additional fees may apply). Simply complete the Electronic Filing section while preparing your waybill and DHL will handle all of the processing for you.
