Given the significant impacts of COVID-19 on the global aviation industry and in order to help us maintain reliable and high quality delivery services for you and your customers, DHL Express introduced a temporary Emergency Situation Surcharge in 2020.

Since the onset of this global pandemic, DHL teams have been working around the clock, adapting and adjusting the operations of our global network to align with new developments, regulatory requirements and constant changes in capacity and demand.

As market conditions continue to evolve with the ongoing COVID-19 situation in combination with the cost associated with capacity constraints in the global air network during the peak period, the Emergency Situation Surcharge (ESS) will be adjusted effective November 7th, 2021 until February 13th, 2022.

We will update customers before February 13th 2022 about the development of market conditions and the subsequent evolution of the Emergency Situation Surcharge.

Although the ESS surcharge for most lanes will not change, we are making adjustments for specific origin/destination combinations. This adjustment reflects changes in market dynamics and air capacity availability during the peak period, and operational restrictions imposed related to COVID-19 measures from local governments.

The adjustments are summarized below:

  • Origins China and Hong Kong to destinations in the Americas region:
    NZD 1.55 to NZD 3.55
  • Origins China and Hong Kong to destinations in the Europe region:
    NZD 1.55 to NZD 2.10
  • Origins EuropeAmericas and Rest of World to destination Australia and New Zealand:
    NZD 0.35 to NZD 3.55

Please note that the ESS is a temporary charge, which allows us to cover part of the operating cost increases and the necessary air network adjustments. We will continue to evaluate and adjust the ESS as market conditions evolve for the duration of this emergency situation.

Annual Price Increase
DHL Express will update its prices, effective January 2022. In New Zealand, the average price increase will be 4.9%.
The price change applies to all discounted rates and agreements, where contracts allow.

DHL has been alerted of the unauthorized use of its business name in SMS messages asking receivers to download an application with the extension '.apk'. We encourage you to let us know at your earliest convenience by sending a screenshot of the suspicious SMS to, include the suspicious phone number in the message. After reporting the fraudulent message, please delete it and under no circumstance should you download the application.

DHL Express has been confirmed by Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) as an essential service provider. Under the essential businesses list on the New Zealand Government Website, DHL Express is identified within the ‘Transport and Logistics’ category, providing logistics and courier services, hence our supply chain remains open during all Alert Levels.

  • DHL Express expects that all customers operating are doing so correctly under the Government Alert Level rules. We encourage all of our customers to refer to the Covid-19 Government Website for further information.
  • Temporary Reception Closures: The safety of our employees and customers is paramount; therefore DHL Express will temporarily close receptions only in locations that are in Alert Level 4 or Alert Level 3. Our receptions will remain open in Locations that are in Alert Level 2 and Alert Level 1.
  • Mandatory Masks: In Alert Level 2, you must legally wear a mask when inside a retail business. Please ensure you are wearing your mask when entering a DHL reception for shipment pick-up or drop-off.
  • If you needed to collect a shipment from a closed service location, please access our On Demand Delivery service and update your delivery location.

As of 01 June 2021, DHL Express will no longer accept cash as a form of payment at our receptions. We will only accept electronic payments like EFTPOS, Credit Card etc. for all transactions.

When shipping, several regulations & policies must be observed. Therefore, DHL reserves the right to physically inspect any item tendered for carriage. Shipments lodged by our cash or credit card paying customers require 100% physical inspection. This policy is aligned with the legal and regulatory requirements of numerous governments and other regulatory authorities for the express delivery industry to ensure only legitimate shipments are processed.

Shipments may also be subject to other security control methods deemed necessary, such as Sniffer Dogs or X-ray without prior notice to the Shipper, Consignee and/or Payer.

Please note: As Items sent as gifts (Birthdays, Festive or Seasonal Celebrations etc.) are also subject to the same inspection(s) as noted above, Shippers are therefore advised not to wrap gifts or seal shipments upon tendering.

Until further notice, DHL Express will not accept shipments of military items subject to national export (or extra-territorial re-export) controls. Customers will be notified as soon as the suspension is lifted.

This suspension does not include domestic shipments or shipments of licensed dual-use items.
